At what point has it held an enormous empire e.g UK 1/3 of the world, Italy(romans) most of Europe and North africa etc etc. In comparable terms the power of the British Empire was far superior than the US's power today. Fighting a war 5000miles away is always going to be difficult (try Vietnam for instance). Also trying and succeding to take over india which in those days was far more important than America.
